Katiba Institute is led by an inclusive team that is passionate about using the constitution as an instrument of change and is committed to protecting and defending the rule of law.
Christine is the Executive Director at Katiba Institute. She holds a Masters degree in law from Central European University; a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi. She is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with diverse experience including in criminal justice, gender-based violence, and children rights. Her interest in constitutionalism began through her work within the criminal justice system and the systemic shortcomings that she observed which she believes could have been addressed by fidelity to the constitution. She believes that Katiba Institute’s work will assist in entrenching in our society and public institutions, the importance of respect of the constitution and rule of law which are the cornerstone of any thriving democracy.
Christine coordinates the programmatic and administrative activities of the organization. She holds a Masters in International Human Rights Law from the former University of Central England (UK) (currently Birmingham City University) and a bachelor in law from the University of Leeds (UK). Her previous assignments were with the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) as a Senior Programme officer and Human Rights Officer respectively.
Emily is a research and litigation associate at Katiba Institute. She holds a Masters (International Law) degree and a Bachelor of laws degree from the University of Pretoria. She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Professionally, Emily has gained work experience in government and academia. She has a passion for human rights law and social justice and has published journal articles on issues related to access to justice, cultural rights and women’s rights. She enjoys public interest litigation, working with communities and is currently undertaking work related to constitutional law, socio-economic rights, urban planning and land use as well as the rights of forest dwelling people.
Jackson is the Finance Officer at Katiba Institute. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Strathmore University specializing in financeand Accounting. He is a member of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya-CPA(K). Jackson has gained extensive experience in the Non-profit sector while working with Katiba Institute. He possesses strong skills in financial and grants management, budgeting, accounting and administration. His most outstanding job qualities include diligence in resolving technical problems and communicating with people.
Lempaa is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. His Academic Achievements include a masters degree in International Human Rights Law from the University of Essex(2011), an LLB of the University of London(2007), PostGraduate Diploma in Mass Communications, University of Nairobi(2001) and a BEd Arts Kenyatta University (1999). He has in the past worked as a High School teacher, a Journalist of the High Court of Kenya and lecturer Media Law and Ethics at Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology. Lempaa has been a leading public interest litigator and advocate. Apart from being multidisciplinary, Lempaa is also multilingual with a working experience in five languages. He has been involved in the high profile public litigation cases. He is an an Alumni of four universities despite a beneficiary of Ford Foundation fellowship in 2010, 2011 programme.
Lulu is the Executive and Administrative Assistant at Katiba Institute. She gives Administrative support to the Organization. She has previously worked as an Administrative Assistant with the Development Policy and Management Forum (DPMF) – a regional policy and management think tank.She is currently Pursuing Higher Diploma in Human Resource management at Institute of Human Resource Management.
Kevin is the Communications & Public Liaison Officer at Katiba Institute. He is a communications and media relations specialist with a demonstrated history of working in media, communications and development. He has previously worked at TI-Kenya and the Media Council of Kenya as Communications Officer. Kevin, passionate about constitutionalism, holds an M.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Nairobi, and a Bachelor’s Degree in English & Literature from Maseno University.
Purity is the Senior Finance Officer at Katiba Institute. She is a Certified Public Accountant in Kenya, with over 8 years of experience in financial management, accounting, financial reporting and system controls. Prior to joining Katiba Institute, Purity worked as a Finance Officer at the Kenyan Section of the International Commission of Jurists. Purity holds a Master of Arts in Economics from University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Arts, Economics from Kenyatta University. She has undertaken a number of trainings in Monitoring & Evaluation, Tax Compliance and Grants Management.
Michelle is the Programs Officer, research, civic education and capacity building. Her professional background is in the areas of environmental law and governance, human rights and the environment, social justice and community development. She has vast experience working in the civil society sector and has served as a project leader and a community paralegal in several community outreach programs. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences from Kenyatta University and has undertaken other professional development courses in advocacy, project management, civic engagement and gender equality studies. Mwanahamisi is passionate about constitutionalism and good governance.
Chris Kerkering is the Litigation Manager at Katiba Institute. He is an attorney licensed in the United States. Chris received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 1995 and a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School in 2001. Following law school, Chris clerked for two United States Judges where he drafted legal opinions in all areas of law, after which he spent seven years working as a lawyer for the Federal Public Defender, where he represented indigent defendants in criminal cases. Chris moved to Nairobi with his family in 2013, where he began working on issues relating to good governance and rule of law in the region, with a focus on Somalia and Kenya.
