Our Team
Christine Nkonge
Christine is the Executive Director at Katiba Institute. She holds a Masters degree in law from Central European University; a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi. She is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with diverse experience including in criminal justice, gender-based violence, and children rights. Her interest in constitutionalism began through her work within the criminal justice system and the systemic shortcomings that she observed which she believes could have been addressed by fidelity to the constitution. She believes that Katiba Institute’s work will assist in entrenching in our society and public institutions, the importance of respect of the constitution and rule of law which are the cornerstone of any thriving democracy.
Christine Njeru-Kuria
Christine coordinates the programmatic and administrative activities of the organization. She holds a Masters in International Human Rights Law from the former University of Central England (UK) (currently Birmingham City University) and a bachelor in law from the University of Leeds (UK). Her previous assignments were with the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) as a Senior Programme officer and Human Rights Officer respectively.
Emily Kinama
Emily is a Research and Litigation Counsel at Katiba Institute. She holds a Masters (International Law) degree and a Bachelor of laws degree from the University of Pretoria. She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Professionally, Emily has gained work experience in government and academia. She has a passion for human rights law and social justice and has published journal articles on issues related to access to justice, cultural rights and women’s rights. She enjoys public interest litigation, working with communities and is currently undertaking work related to constitutional law, socio-economic rights, urban planning and land use as well as the rights of forest dwelling people.
Jackson Kiberenge
Jackson is the Finance Officer at Katiba Institute. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Strathmore University specializing in financeand Accounting. He is a member of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya-CPA(K). Jackson has gained extensive experience in the Non-profit sector while working with Katiba Institute. He possesses strong skills in financial and grants management, budgeting, accounting and administration. His most outstanding job qualities include diligence in resolving technical problems and communicating with people.
Lempaa Suyianka
Lempaa is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. His Academic Achievements include a masters degree in International Human Rights Law from the University of Essex(2011), an LLB of the University of London(2007), PostGraduate Diploma in Mass Communications, University of Nairobi(2001) and a BEd Arts Kenyatta University (1999). He has in the past worked as a High School teacher, a Journalist of the High Court of Kenya and lecturer Media Law and Ethics at Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology. Lempaa has been a leading public interest litigator and advocate. Apart from being multidisciplinary, Lempaa is also multilingual with a working experience in five languages. He has been involved in the high profile public litigation cases. He is an an Alumni of four universities despite a beneficiary of Ford Foundation fellowship in 2010, 2011 programme.
Lulu Kavoi
Lulu is the Executive and Administrative Assistant at Katiba Institute. She gives Administrative support to the Organization. She has previously worked as an Administrative Assistant with the Development Policy and Management Forum (DPMF) – a regional policy and management think tank.She is currently Pursuing Higher Diploma in Human Resource management at Institute of Human Resource Management.
Kevin Mabonga
Kevin is the Communications & Public Liaison Officer at Katiba Institute. He is a communications and media relations specialist with a demonstrated history of working in media, communications and development. He has previously worked at TI-Kenya and the Media Council of Kenya as Communications Officer. Kevin, passionate about constitutionalism, holds an M.A. in Communication Studies from the University of Nairobi, and a Bachelor’s Degree in English & Literature from Maseno University.
Purity Kirema
Purity is the Senior Finance Officer at Katiba Institute. She is a Certified Public Accountant in Kenya, with over 8 years of experience in financial management, accounting, financial reporting and system controls. Prior to joining Katiba Institute, Purity worked as a Finance Officer at the Kenyan Section of the International Commission of Jurists. Purity holds a Master of Arts in Economics from University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Arts, Economics from Kenyatta University. She has undertaken a number of trainings in Monitoring & Evaluation, Tax Compliance and Grants Management.
Chris Kerkering
Chris Kerkering is the Litigation Manager at Katiba Institute. He is an attorney licensed in the United States. Chris received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 1995 and a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School in 2001. Following law school, Chris clerked for two United States Judges where he drafted legal opinions in all areas of law, after which he spent seven years working as a lawyer for the Federal Public Defender, where he represented indigent defendants in criminal cases. Chris moved to Nairobi with his family in 2013, where he began working on issues relating to good governance and rule of law in the region, with a focus on Somalia and Kenya.
Patriciah Joseph
Patriciah Joseph is the Programmes Manager at Katiba Institute. She is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over ten years’ post-admission experience. She holds a Master of Laws degree (LL.M) in Comparative Constitutional Law from the Central European University, Budapest/Vienna, Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from Moi University, Kenya. Previously, Patriciah has served as a legal researcher at the Judiciary in the High Court, various election courts in the superior courts, Judiciary Committee on Elections and Judiciary Task Forces/Committees on Sentencing, Implementation of the Bail and Bond Policy and Development of Guidelines on Active Case Management in Criminal Cases. She has also extensively contributed towards promoting the rights of children in Kenya through research and advocacy. Her research interests include constitutionalism, constitution building especially in Africa, gender and governance, human rights, electoral justice and access to justice. Patriciah is a member of the Law Society of Kenya and the Institute of Economic Affairs, Kenya.
Alvin Walubengo
Alvin holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from the United States International University Africa (USIU-A). He is a certified Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) practitioner, with demonstrated experience working in Governance, advocacy, development, human rights, the rule of law and health sectors as both an officer and an M&E practitioner. Alvin has previously worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Trade, the Republic of Kenya, AMREF Health Africa and more recently as the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning officer at the Kenyan Section of the International Commission of Jurists.
Ray Odanga
Ray Odanga is a Legal Researcher at Katiba Institute. He is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from Moi University, Kenya, a Postgraduate Diploma from Kenya School of Law, a Certificate in Climate Change Law and Litigation from the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL), London, and a Certificate in Data Protection from the Strathmore University’s Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT). His research interests include constitutionalism, governance, human rights, environmental law, climate change, data protection, and access to justice. In addition, Ray has a keen interest in how law can be used as a tool to affirm and defend the rights of indigenous and marginalized communities and how strategic litigation can be used to protect human rights and advance the rule of law through litigation and research.
Eileen Imbosa
Eileen Imbosa is KI’s Countering Violent Extremism Litigation Counsel. She holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Moi University and is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. Before joining KI, Eileen worked with refugees and asylum seekers providing legal aid, legal representation within the criminal courts, and advocacy for refugee rights. She has also worked on numerous cases advocating for the rights of survivors of gender based violence and is a pro-bono advocate offering legal representation to children in conflict with the law with the criminal courts. Eileen enjoys public interest litigation, working with communities and is currently, with the Police Reforms Working Group in advocating for police reforms as intended by the Constitution of Kenya.
Michael Kioko Munguti
Michael Kioko Munguti is a Legal Assistant at Katiba Institute. He holds Diploma of Law From Nairobi Institute of Business Studies (NIBS). He is a seasoned Licensed Court process server and holds a certificate from the Judiciary of Kenya. Michael, a trained mediator, holds a certificate of Mediation from Mediation Training Institute International East Africa. His tasks in the Litigation Department include assisting the Litigation Counsels by preparing Court documents, perusal of Court files, fixing of hearing dates at the registry, filing of Court pleadings in the Judiciary portal, filing of Court Pleadings Physically in the registry, service of Court Pleadings online and Physically.
